In 1934, at the age of 28, Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote a letter to a friend about an upcoming conference that would involve members of churches from several countries and denominations. In this letter, he wrote, “We must make it clear—fearful as it is—that the time is very near when we shall have to decide between National Socialism and Christianity. It may be fearfully hard and difficult for us all, but we must get right to the root of things, with open Christian speaking and no diplomacy. And in prayer together we will find the way.”[1] This was before the Holocaust began, before WWII began. But Bonhoeffer saw that one could not embrace the Christian faith and embrace the political tide of his nation that was so enamored with the Nazi party. The two simply were not compatible. On April 9th, 1945, he was executed for his part in the German resistance to the Nazi regime.
The necessity of such a distinction—between the values of our faith and the values embodied in large segments of the wider culture—is once again becoming apparent. It is alarming to see so many people in the United States embracing Donald Trump in his bid to become President of the United States. No, Trump is not Hitler, but he nevertheless embodies values that should cause serious concern among Christians.
One of the great ironies of Trump’s candidacy, however, is that so many of his supporters are evangelical Christians. While many evangelicals, as well of Christians of other stripes, oppose Trump, he doesn’t need all of us. He only needs enough to get elected. Christian support for Trump is essential for his success moving forward.
I myself identify as an evangelical, though this may not tell you much. The term “evangelical” has become rather diffuse over the last couple of decades. It can describe Christians as different as Franklin Graham and Jim Wallis. According to the National Association of Evangelicals, there are four primary characteristics of evangelicalism:
Conversionism: the belief that lives need to be transformed through a “born-again” experience and a life long process of following Jesus.
Activism: the expression and demonstration of the gospel in missionary and social reform efforts.
Biblicism: a high regard for and obedience to the Bible as the ultimate authority.
Crucicentrism: a stress on the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross as making possible the redemption of humanity
These four characteristics fit me quite well, but I will never support Donald Trump. In fact, I will never support Donald Trump because I’m an evangelical Christian. He mocks everything Christians should embody. He scapegoats the culturally vulnerable. He shows deep contempt for those whom he sees as different (e.g., Muslims and Mexicans). He has openly and unashamedly derided both women and ethnic minorities. He has even said that a man should treat women “like shit.” He has posed on the cover of Playboy. He consistently insults and demeans those with whom he disagrees. He has belittled Holy Communion, referring to it as drinking his “little wine” and eating his “little cracker.” Consistent with this last offense, he is flippantly dismissive of the idea that he needs to engage in any type of personal repentance.
Nevertheless, a substantial number of evangelicals are backing Trump. Why would they do this? According to the New York Times,
“Social conservatives are taking a look at Trump and saying he’s not with me on all these issues, but the overall larger imperative for us is to tear down this system that has not served us for a very long time,” said Gregg Keller, a former executive director of the Faith and Freedom Coalition, which was founded by the Christian conservative Ralph Reed.
I look at this Trump phenomenon and at first I was startled. I remember the first time he announced that he was going to run for president I laughed, I figured that there was no way the American public would accept this man as president. He was too outside, too fringe. Now I see his success and it looks like he will receive the Republican nomination. How did this happen? Then I realized the state of fear and mis-trust this country is in. Everything seems up-side down. Americans have been bombarded with fear over every little thing, to the point that they are frantically looking around for anything to pull them out. The fact is, we are a very anxious people, and the anxiety runs us. I don’t think most Christians are giving themselves over to prayer in this area, and so instead of being guided by the love of Christ, they are being blinded by their fear.
I got news for you..cops are part of the intelligence crime ops.
Ok..BORN AND RAISED LEGAL HISPANIC AMERICAN…Where do I sign up for TRUMP, and can Trump stop the intelligence mafia network that’s targeting U.S. whistleblowers? And just because I have a beardbeard..does not make me a MUSLIM!!!!ISLAM is demonic. Read first 4 chaps..from app on play store.
NEW JERSEY….
So…I decide to take a walk in the late afternoon. As I walk across the parking lot, security guard salutes me BIG BLACK MAN, and another one dressed in scrubs, having a peculiarly treacherous and dim witted stare . Anyway, he asked me how I was…I said Blessed by Yeshua. I even showed him my shirt with Yeshua on it. He asked: WHATS THAT? I explain…and move on, but as I do…he signals a few people. Later, what appears to be a fat white…undercover cop…nearly runs me over, and two black women, appear to be staking out my home. I suppose seeing the beard frightened them, part of their mind control profiling campaign. In any case…the stalking continues. Hopefully I won’t wind up another patsy in their false flag ops. You’d think they be busy enough with other criminal activity. In another state…I attempted to report what appeared to be..ILLEGAL drug activity. As I am speaking to officer, three other cops ambush me…falsely accuse me, threaten me, and finally release me. Helicopters began hovering over my property, a camera was placed in front of my home, cops would covertly stalk me in town…and even had a guy in a hood flash a knife at me..in the area. They have been sending creepy agent looking people to my property also ( apparently tagging things) , and I believe it was because I had voiced my opinion concerning 911 on live call in CSPAN. One night I witnessed them attempting to sneak into my home ( see SNEAK AND PEEK), etc. Even placed stationary night drones over my property. My electronics totally sabotaged..see PHANTOM CENSORING. LIFE IN THE POLICE TERROR STATE 2016…AIDED BY THE SLAVE BRAINED BLACK…AND OTHERS. GOD HELP US ALL.

Well said. I have the exact same sentiments and I am confused and disappointed to see so many ‘true’ Christians supporting this man. However, I do believe the end days are here and could it possibly be that our Lord will put this man in the White House to play a part in these end times? I am beginning to think so. I don’t see any fruit in him and from that I have the opinion he does not know the lord. But do any of us know the plans of the Lord? We can trust that his perfect ‘will’ will be done in our lives- those that are serving Him.
I don’t normally comment on blogs such as this one but today I am hoping that my comment may offer a different view that may promote a deeper discussion. I am and have been for the majority of my life an Athiest. I was raised in a very traditional Roman Catholic home but at the age of 14 found I had far more questions about the methods and motives of ” christians”than they had answers. It took m the next 3 years of reading all manner of religious texts to come to the conclusions that pushed me forever away from any belief in anything greater than my best self. It is because of this journey that I feel as if I understand Mr. Trumps belief that he is a Christian despite most of main stream Christian America saying otherwise.
The question begging to be answered for me is why one may only be considered “Christian” if they are willing to conform to organized religions belief of Christianity?
Maybe if those who take issue with or who don’t understand why so many Christian leaders would choose to back Mr. Trump moved beyond their notion of what “true” Christians are they could then practiced true Christianity and stop judging his ability in the political ring, based on a personal religious belief.
