In 1934, at the age of 28, Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote a letter to a friend about an upcoming conference that would involve members of churches from several countries and denominations. In this letter, he wrote, “We must make it clear—fearful as it is—that the time is very near when we shall have to decide between National Socialism and Christianity. It may be fearfully hard and difficult for us all, but we must get right to the root of things, with open Christian speaking and no diplomacy. And in prayer together we will find the way.”[1] This was before the Holocaust began, before WWII began. But Bonhoeffer saw that one could not embrace the Christian faith and embrace the political tide of his nation that was so enamored with the Nazi party. The two simply were not compatible. On April 9th, 1945, he was executed for his part in the German resistance to the Nazi regime.
The necessity of such a distinction—between the values of our faith and the values embodied in large segments of the wider culture—is once again becoming apparent. It is alarming to see so many people in the United States embracing Donald Trump in his bid to become President of the United States. No, Trump is not Hitler, but he nevertheless embodies values that should cause serious concern among Christians.
One of the great ironies of Trump’s candidacy, however, is that so many of his supporters are evangelical Christians. While many evangelicals, as well of Christians of other stripes, oppose Trump, he doesn’t need all of us. He only needs enough to get elected. Christian support for Trump is essential for his success moving forward.
I myself identify as an evangelical, though this may not tell you much. The term “evangelical” has become rather diffuse over the last couple of decades. It can describe Christians as different as Franklin Graham and Jim Wallis. According to the National Association of Evangelicals, there are four primary characteristics of evangelicalism:
Conversionism: the belief that lives need to be transformed through a “born-again” experience and a life long process of following Jesus.
Activism: the expression and demonstration of the gospel in missionary and social reform efforts.
Biblicism: a high regard for and obedience to the Bible as the ultimate authority.
Crucicentrism: a stress on the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross as making possible the redemption of humanity
These four characteristics fit me quite well, but I will never support Donald Trump. In fact, I will never support Donald Trump because I’m an evangelical Christian. He mocks everything Christians should embody. He scapegoats the culturally vulnerable. He shows deep contempt for those whom he sees as different (e.g., Muslims and Mexicans). He has openly and unashamedly derided both women and ethnic minorities. He has even said that a man should treat women “like shit.” He has posed on the cover of Playboy. He consistently insults and demeans those with whom he disagrees. He has belittled Holy Communion, referring to it as drinking his “little wine” and eating his “little cracker.” Consistent with this last offense, he is flippantly dismissive of the idea that he needs to engage in any type of personal repentance.
Nevertheless, a substantial number of evangelicals are backing Trump. Why would they do this? According to the New York Times,
“Social conservatives are taking a look at Trump and saying he’s not with me on all these issues, but the overall larger imperative for us is to tear down this system that has not served us for a very long time,” said Gregg Keller, a former executive director of the Faith and Freedom Coalition, which was founded by the Christian conservative Ralph Reed.
I dont see how anyone can proffess christianity yet slander Donald Trump with multiple known and proven lies.
I See more dishonesty, lying, cheating, trickery from the Ted Cruz campaign.
Donald Trump has never claimed to be a model Christian but indeed has vowed to stand up for Christian values and is known to be a man of his word.
Ted Cruz has shown his true colors in Iowa . He is not a man that can be trusted.
Trump is the only candidate that can win against Hilary and or Bernie. Trump has experience in getting things done and with the ability to bring people together to achieve a common goal.
We don’t need more gridlock or senators whose best hope is a filibuster. We need a president that can bring people over to the conservative side and grow our influence in washington.
TED Cruz is a divider not a uniter.
I’m with you on this.
I’m afraid you haven’t done your due diligence where Trump is concerned. This is a morally ambigous man who hasn’t said one substantive thing through the whole campaign? He must believe a sucker is born evert minute… I guess he’s right because his band wagon is full but no one in it seems to know where it’s going and how. As for me, I continue to support Carson. Contrary to what everyone is saying, he hasn’t dropped out as yet. Till he does, I’m sticking with the only truly intelligent man in the race. Go Ben go!
You are so correct! But maybe Ben is too moral and Godly to hold the position. Being President of the U S does not seem to hold the same level of respect worldwide as it once used to. He would be an excellent surgeon general.
You are so right. We are not electing a Pastor for a church. Our country is in trouble due to the lack of leadership for the past 7 years. Trump supporters believe he can get the job done.
This lie about Ted Cruz and Iowa needs to stop. The media and Trump just keep repeating it. This is what happened. Cruz was across town giving a caucus speech. A story came across the wire that Carson was heading home and not going on to New Hampshire. This would appear that he was dropping out. I know that is what I thought when I saw the story. ALL the campaigns sent messages on to their people that it appeared that Carson was getting out. How a caucus works is each campaign has a representative at each caucus location advocating that people support their guy over the other guy. ALL the campaigns added hey it looks like Carson is out to their information to be shared by their caucus leaders. Carson had representatives there that were able to correct the information, so no one “stole votes”. Which is why there has yet to be one interview with a voter saying this information defrauded him of his vote. The next day, Cruz found out that Carson felt that a fraud had been committed against him. Since Cruz won and his campaign was the most vocal in getting out the CNN story, Carson attacked him personally. Cruz IMMEDIATELY called Carson to straighten things out. He apologized for HIS CAMPAIGN not verifying the story before passing it on. Carson asked him if he would make the apology public. He agreed. NO other campaign apologized. Trump, Rubio, even Paul all passed on the story. But somehow Trump (who is the most dishonest man) was able to turn this into Cruz is a liar and a cheater. And people have swallowed it hook, line, and sinker.
Hint: Cruz is a panderer, not a Christian.
Which is why my vote is for Bernie! “slander Donald Trump”???? Really??
Do you even have a clue about socialism. Yes he promises everything for everyone, but where will the money come from? You, me and every taxpyer, not just the 1%ers. There is not enough money in that 1% to pay for all he promises, and Hillary is just proposing just the same. Educate your self.

Prior to his election, Obama was in my view, an empty suit. His presidency pretty well supports my opinion. Today,
Trump, in my opinion is not an empty suit but rather an egotistical demagogue, who will only produce hot air, while the US image will continue to diminish in the world at large. How harmful the result would be is anyone’s guess.
Obama professed to be a Christian while running for office, and look what we got from that election. We got a leader that doesn’t know what he believes nor how to lead. Hillary will continue the same path as Obama and has even suggested Obama would make a good Supreme Court Justice.
Yes I would rather have Mike Huckaby in there but he is no longer in the race. Rubio is now bought and paid for by the republican machine, that is why they are suggesting that Cruse drop out for the good of the party. Yes Trump has his flaws but don’t we all? I like the idea that he didn’t accept donations from big business, that they would expect to be paid back for down the road. He knows the system and he has used the system to his advantage. It will be harder for someone to try and pull the wool over his eyes than someone who owes everybody that funded him favors. Considering the possibilities that it may come to a choice of Trump or Clinton I choose Trump.
The part about the Pope’s comments. A man that lives within a walled city with guards around him all the time has no right to talk about building bridges rather than walls to protect our country. His argument doesn’t stand a chance in a debate or in court. Remember the old show ” It Takes A Thief” where they used a thief to help catch a thief. Maybe Trump is the man we need at this time that knows the in’s and out’s of negotiating to get this country back on its feet again. I think and hope that Trump is the man for the job. It is time for real Hope and Change because Obama’s version sure didn’t work the last 7 years!
